In Grade 6 Wellness classes , we look at  at the issue of safety. We begin by discussing cybersafety , including some specific ways to keep yourself safe when using the internet , cell phones, email and social networking sites. As a class we discuss cyberbullying and the specifics of what that entails. Students do a self-assessment and reflect on whether they have ever engaged in activity that might be considered cyberbullying. Next we look at specific strategies to protect oneself from injury including: paying attention, thinking before acting, knowing your limits, practising refusal skills, using safety equipment and changing risky behavior and risky situations.

Emotional Health

We begin the second quarter  concentrating  on emotional health.  We  specifically  discuss the emotion of anger as well as  emotional triggers and how identifying them can help us to respond appropriately.  Specific strategies that are helpful when dealing with angry emotions are also discussed.

We continue our study of nutrition in Wellness class . The next few lessons will focus on a healthy eating promo. From our readings and discussions in class, we discovered the importance of eating the right amounts of the essential nutrients regularly in order to maintain good health. These nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water. We discussed recommendations that should be taken into account when planning meals and snacks:

  • Eat a variety of foods
  • Avoid too much fat
  • Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and grains
  • Use sugars only in moderation
  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water each day

Students will choose a snack/food and research the nutrients as well as the benefits of the nutrients in the food that they select. Next, they will design and compose a poster that advertises the chosen food and its nutrients. Finally , students will bring a sample of their food to class to share with classmates.
