Peer Pressure, Refusal Skills, etc.

We begin the unit by discussing peer pressure and refusal skills.  We next discuss the importance of good choices with our friendships and how these choices affect how we deal with peer pressure.  We then look at the issue of drugs.   A drug is any substance that changes the way your mind or body works.  We have looked at the different categories of drugs: drugs that are legal for everyone such as caffeine, drugs that are legal only for adults, such as tobacco and alcohol, medicines(over the counter and prescription) and illegal drugs.   We discussed factors that affect a person’s reaction to drugs including: weight, presence of food in the stomach, amount of the drug and mixing of different drugs.    In the next few classes , we will concentrate on  inhalants.  Students will research the topic and prepare a presentation  as part of a group activity.

We look at characteristics of people with high or low self-esteem and discuss what healthy self-esteem should look like. Students shared ideas about situations that can cause someone with healthy self-esteem to have a dip in his or her self-esteem. We learned that a hallmark of someone with healthy self-esteem is being able to accept your strengths and weaknesses.  Next, students will identify ten of their personal strengths.  They are encouraged to reflect on their abilities as well as their relationships with others.

We continue our study of nutrition in Wellness class . The next few lessons will focus on a healthy eating promo. From our readings and discussions in class, we discovered the importance of eating the right amounts of the essential nutrients regularly in order to maintain good health. These nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water. We discussed recommendations that should be taken into account when planning meals and snacks:

  • Eat a variety of foods
  • Avoid too much fat
  • Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and grains
  • Use sugars only in moderation
  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water each day

Students will choose a snack/food and research the nutrients as well as the benefits of the nutrients in the food that they select. Next, they will design and compose a poster that advertises the chosen food and its nutrients. Finally , students will bring a sample of their food to class to share with classmates.

With the use of textbook readings,  and skills work sheets, we are discussing  six simple steps to good decisions. Students learn how to go through the steps of making a decision. They learn how to reflect on their decisions and how to use the information to make healthy, positive choices.

  1. Identify the problem….what is the decision you have to make.
  2. Consider your values…what is important to you?
  3. List the options… what possible actions could you take?
  4. Weigh the consequences…list the pros and cons of each option.
  5. Decide and act….describe what you will do .  explain your decision.
  6. Evaluate your choice…how do you feel about the action you took? did you make a good decision? would you take a different action if faced with the same situation again?
